A singer, songwriter and music producer from Kuching, Sarawak, Reening has developed an artistic voice rooted in the emotional traditions of blues and soul, while embracing the textures and accessibility of contemporary R&B and pop. His music occupies a space where vulnerability meets restraint, allowing the songs to breathe while leaving enough room for the listener to find their own meaning within them.

That sensibility is at the heart of Was It Enough, Reening’s 2021 debut album.Across its ten tracks, the album unfolds as an introspective portrait of uncertainty, longing, self-discovery and the complicated process of moving forward. From None to Spare and Say What You Know to Notice Me, Leave It All Behind and Follow the Escape, Reening approaches deeply personal themes without overstating them. Instead, he allows emotion to emerge naturally through melody, phrasing and atmosphere.

At the centre of the record sits its deceptively simple title: Was It Enough?

It is a question that can be interpreted in countless ways — about love, ambition, sacrifice, identity, relationships or the choices we make when no outcome feels entirely certain. Reening  does not attempt to answer it definitively. His strength as an artist lies in allowing the question to remain open.

That openness has become an important part of his musical character.

Reening approaches songwriting not simply as a means of telling stories, but as a way of examining them. His work often inhabits the space between what we say and what we actually feel — the hesitation before making a decision, the desire to be understood, the recognition that something has changed, and the difficult acceptance that sometimes moving forward means leaving something behind.

His background as a producer further shapes that perspective. With an understanding of music that extends beyond performance and into arrangement, recording and sonic construction, Reening treats the studio as an extension of the songwriting process. His postgraduate studies in music-related work at the University of York further contributed to an artistic approach grounded in both creative instinct and technical understanding.

Yet, for all its musical craftsmanship, Reening’s work ultimately comes back to something much more human. Connection. His songs speak to the experience of being seen — or feeling unseen — of questioning one's place among others, and of confronting the uncomfortable possibility that the answers we are looking for may not arrive when we expect them to.
